Installation Guide
  • Planning is Key: A solid plan is crucial for a successful paving project. Ensure adequate drainage to make your project safe and long-lasting.
  • Preparation: Mark out the area and excavate accordingly. For foot traffic, a 100-150mm layer of crushed hardcore is generally sufficient, while driveways or areas with wet soil may require up to 200mm. Domestic driveways typically need excavation to a depth of 200-250mm. Extend the excavation by 150-200mm beyond the boundaries to allow space for edge restraints.
  • Sub-Base: Lay a suitable sub-base, such as crushed hardcore, extending beyond the paving stones for added stability. Compact this layer using a vibrating compaction plate (Wacker Plate) for a firm foundation.
  • Mortar Bed: Once the sub-base is compacted, apply a wet bed of concrete mortar in a 4:1 ratio of washed sharp sand to cement. Aim for a laying course of 35-50mm.
  • Full-Bed Support: All paving stones should be laid on a full bed of concrete to support the entire stone. Avoid spot bedding, as it can cause instability. Be sure to clean off any cement stains immediately to prevent marking, and do not use acid-based cleaners.
  • Laying Stones: Carefully position each paving stone on the mortar and tap into place with a rubber mallet, leaving adequate joints. Continue laying in your chosen pattern.
  • Driveways: For driveways, compact the sub-base and build edge restraints using kerbs or blocks set on a concrete bed to provide stability.
  • Curing and Jointing: Allow 48 hours for the slabs to cure before proceeding. Use an industry-standard jointing compound to fill the joints. This can be sourced from local builders' merchants or on our website. Always follow the manufacturer's instructions when using jointing compounds.
  • Laying Circles: When laying circular patterns, start with the centre stone and work outwards. If incorporating a circle into a larger patio, always lay the circle first.
