Clocks Go Back on 25 October: Get Your Patio Winter-Ready in 30 Minutes

On Sunday 25 October, the clocks go back and the evenings vanish. Your patio quietly shifts from "lovely spot for a cuppa" to "that thing I glance at through the kitchen window". That's exactly why this weekend is the best time to give it half an hour of attention. Do it now and you'll uncover a patio you're proud of in March, not a green, slippery one.

Why October Is the Best Time for Patio Care

What Autumn Does to Your Paving

Fallen Leaves

Wet leaves look charming for about a day. Left on paving, they can leave brown tannin stains, especially on lighter stone, and they trap moisture all winter.

Damp and Algae

Shady, north-facing corners stay damp for months. Algae, moss and black spots love it, and in winter they turn from unsightly to genuinely slippery.

Your 30-Minute Patio Winter Checklist

Step 1: Sweep the Surface (5 Minutes)

Grab a stiff brush and clear every leaf, twig and bit of debris. Pay extra attention to corners and edges where water collects. A quick sweep every week or so through autumn keeps things under control.

Step 2: Check Your Joints (5 Minutes)

Walk the patio and look for gaps, crumbling mortar or washed-out joints. Water that seeps in and freezes can turn a small problem into a big one. Patching now is far easier than re-laying later. Our EASYJoint paving jointing compounds are made for exactly this job. Always follow the temperature and dry-weather guidance on the label.

Step 3: Tackle Algae, Moss and Black Spots (10 Minutes)

Treat green and dark patches now, before winter damp makes them worse.

For General Green Growth

The EASYCare Algae Remover is a good place to start.

For Stubborn Black Spots

Try the Patio Black Spot Remover for Natural Stone, which is designed for those dark specks that appear on natural stone.

For a Proper Sandstone Clean

The Stone King Indian Sandstone Cleaner is made for Indian sandstone.

A Word on Pressure Washers

They're tempting, but a fierce jet can blast out your jointing and roughen the surface. Keep the pressure low, use a wide fan nozzle and keep the lance moving. On limestone, avoid acidic cleaners and choose products made for the job.

Step 4: Seal It, But Only If the Weather Plays Ball

A good sealer helps stone shrug off water and stains and makes it easier to keep clean. The catch is that the surface must be clean and completely dry, with a dry spell afterwards. If October is being typically October, don't rush it. Sealing damp stone can trap moisture and leave a cloudy finish. Waiting until spring is perfectly fine.

When the weather is right, choose the sealer for your material:

Step 5: Lift the Pots and Tuck Away the Furniture (5 Minutes)

Heavy planters sitting flat on paving trap water underneath and can leave rings or green patches. Pop them on pot feet and store cushions and lightweight furniture for the winter. It's a small job that saves a lot of scrubbing in spring.

Frosty Mornings: Keeping Your Patio Safe

The best winter plan is a brush, a little grit or sand and a slow, careful walk. Before reaching for rock salt or a de-icer, check it's suitable for your type of stone, as some products aren't kind to natural stone or jointing. If you're unsure, ask us.

If a damp, shady garden keeps catching you out, it may be worth considering a slip-resistant surface. Our R11 anti-slip porcelain paving is a popular choice for exactly that reason.

Quick Questions

Can I clean my patio in October?

Yes, and it's one of the best times to do it. Just choose a dry day and avoid cleaning if a hard frost is forecast.

Should I seal my patio before winter?

Only if the stone is clean and completely dry, and the forecast is settled. If not, wait until spring.

What's the easiest paving to look after in winter?

Porcelain has very low water absorption and is usually the simplest to wipe clean. Natural stone such as sandstone and limestone is wonderfully characterful but benefits from sealing and a seasonal clean.

Your Patio, Sorted Before the Clocks Change

Sweep it, check the joints, treat the green and black patches and lift the pots. Four jobs, one cuppa and your patio is ready for whatever the British weather throws at it.
